Coastal family home

Back to recent projects

This project involves the design of a coastal family home that responds directly to its Southshore context while supporting the long-term needs of its occupants. The brief prioritised outdoor coastal living, strong indoor–outdoor connections, and a sensitive relationship with both the natural environment and the surrounding community.

Flexibility is key to the layout of the spaces, enabling the home to adapt to changing family dynamics over time—from early childhood through adolescence, and into future downsizing. Carefully considered zoning, abundant natural light, and sheltered exterior spaces ensure year-round usability and resilience, supporting both daily living and evolving lifestyle needs.

Sustainability is embedded throughout the design, informing both construction methodology and material selection. Key performance features include structurally insulated panels (SIPs), a balanced heat recovery ventilation system, optimised building orientation for passive solar gain, and high-performance glazing. Together, these strategies create a warm, healthy, and energy-efficient home well suited to coastal conditions.

Exterior materials have been selected for durability and their ability to weather gracefully in a marine environment, contributing to a timeless architectural expression. Landscape planting is designed to mature alongside the building, fostering an ongoing relationship between the home and the evolving coastal ecology.

Overall, the project represents a site-specific architectural response that prioritises resilience, sustainability, and long-term liveability, while making a positive contribution to the Southshore community and its coastal setting.
